This can-do and long time resident gives lie to the common
assumption that the rocking chair is our favorite place to be. She’s
an involved and vibrant force, and has been for many years. Her
husband, Thurman, received both his MA degree and Doctorate
degree in Religious Education. They spent 30 years serving in
the Memphis area. Catherine worked as volunteer Director for
the Shelby Baptist Association’s children’s ministry. The Foreign
Missions Board sent the couple to Brazil for two weeks to train
pastors and Sunday school workers. She also served as Director
of Children’s Ministry at Bellevue Baptist Church. Married for 68
years to the love of her life, Catherine lost her husband to illness
in 2009.
Catherine’s efforts to make a difference have continued
unabated. She was Director of the Kirby Pines Drama Club which
segued into the Ham-ateur Club. During her 12 years’ tenure, she
has staged an average of five programs each year. Special shows
that she has presented include a 2011 Celebration of Biblical
Women; 2003 play, “The Umbrella Man”; and 2004 play, “AView
From the Bridge”. Both plays were written by John Malm, Kirby
Pines resident.
Catherine also is a member of the Poet’s Corner, writing verses
and providing feedback to other members of the group on their
work. For many years a member of the Story Teller’s League, she
plans to renew her relationship with this group and rejoin their
ranks as a master story teller. She sees her life as a ministry. She
has gained much enjoyment in her work and talks easily about
receiving from others as much as she is giving to others. Her
outlook is positive; her talents in short supply. She never stops
doing for others.
All of us are wondrous creations of intellectual and sensate
abilities, tools by which we build a productive and healthy outlook
on life. How we each choose to use our capabilities is the basis of
our satisfaction with life. It’s easy to do nothing and see life as
not giving you a fair shake. However, the move toward positive is
something all of us can do; and the circle of giving and getting is
life sustaining as people respond in kind. Positive efforts endure –
Life Is Good.

Your talent is God’s gift to you.
What you do with it
is your gift back to God”.
