Our first annual Arthritis Walk at Kirby Pines on
May 30 was a great success. More than 30 residents
came to the gathering to show their support. Mary Hand
welcomed everyone and led a short warm-up before the
walk. Mary teaches the Arthritis Foundation Water and
Exercise classes and leads the Walk with Ease Program.
Then we cheered on 20 walkers on their tour around
the lake at Kirby Pines. Our supporters played Arthri-
tis Bingo for prizes while the walkers were out. When
the walkers returned,
we gave away 6 nice
door prizes provid-
ed by the Arthritis
Foundation. We all
enjoyed the light re-
freshments. We col-
lected $375 to donate
towards the Arthritis
Foundation.
Thank you all for
your interest and sup-
port of our exercise
programs. Keep it
moving!

New Opportunities to Keep Fit
Summer time and the living is easy. Schedules tend to slow down in the summer. That
doesn’t mean you can take a vacation from your exercise program. In fact the slower schedule
may mean you can find time to get in that exercise class you have been meaning to check out.
I can’t find my bathing suit” is not a valid excuse for missing a water aerobics class with all the
department stores stocked with some very cute suits for the season.
In your travels, most hotels and resorts have exercise rooms with basic exercise equip-
ment such as: treadmills, stationary bikes, weights and pools. Utilize equipment you are
familiar with most. Vacation destinations usually have beautiful places to walk such as on the
beach, around a lake, in the mountains, or through quaint or tourist-inviting towns. A word
to the wise: To really enjoy your vacation, start a walking or exercise program several weeks
before you go so that you can build up your strength and endurance. It’s no fun to “overdo
it” on a trip. You don’t want to miss a moment of vacation caused by exhaustion. Even a fit
grandpa can get fatigued when chasing little ones.
Another helpful hint in these hot summer months is: drink more water to keep your
system flushed. Urinary tract infections are much more prevalent. Carry a bottle of water
everywhere. It is so easy to become dehydrated which could lead to other complications like
heat exhaustion.
Come to the Oasis before you take your vacation or make your escape to the Oasis to
work off those extra post-vacation pounds.
THAT i s one ug l y t i e. . . we l l two.
It is a very rare occasion to see two handsome and stylish gentlemen
wearing such awful ties... unless it is for Kirby Pines Annual Father’s Day
Ugly Tie competition.
Roy Barnes and George Pence were just two of many Kirby Pines gen-
tlemen that participated in the contest this year during our Father’s Day
celebration and, as it turns out, George’s “Doggone” ugly tie won!
