how does your garden grow?
As the temperature starts to rise, it
is only natural that we all want to stay
cool. Staying cool however, does not
mean that you have to be less active. In
fact staying active may just take your
mind off the hot weather. You will find
this month’s calendar of events filled
with numerous opportunities to stay
active.
One way to stay active and cool
indoors, is to volunteer at Kirby Pines.
Volunteer opportunities provide social
interaction, mental stimulation and
spiritual growth. For example, if you
have always wanted to see what it
was like to run a general store, why
not volunteer to assist in the Blossom
Shop. Among the items the Blossom
Shop sells are greeting cards, toiletries,
snacks, jewelry, stamps, and small gifts.
It is located on the second floor of the
main building and is a hub of activity.
If you want more mental stimulation,
Be a Volunteer
a t K i r b y P i n e s
you can volunteer to read movie
reviews and then suggest which movies
might be shown in the movie theater, or
assist the marketing department with
one of their many luncheons. If you
volunteered at your church, then why
not try volunteering to assist with our
weekly Vesper Service, or in selecting a
speaker or musical event.
For more information about
volunteer opportunities a Kirby Pines,
contact Cheryl Grimes in our Activities
&
Events department. Cheryl will be
happy to connect you with the activity
that meets your volunteer desire.
This month’s cover features Dr. Charles
Parrott, president of the Garden Gro’ers
Club, who has been a resident of Kirby
Pines since August of 2010, with his
wife, Laura. Once Dr. Parrott settled in
and got the lay of the land, he noticed
the garden area, which at the time
was a mere 12’ X 12’ plot behind the
greenhouse.After speaking with Charlie
Trammell, he received the green light to
make the garden grow, and it did just
that.
With the help of his fellow
green thumbers, the garden
now has raised beds and is
divided into 10 foot sections,
5
rows wide and 60 feet
long, making up 30 plots,
which allows residents to
grow flowers, plants and
vegetables to their heart’s
content.
If you are interested in joining or
volunteering to help, The Garden
Gro’ers Club meets once a month in
the Club Room at the Greenhouse. This
month’s meeting is at 10:30 am on July
10
th. For those unable to get out there
and grow your own, you can reap the
rewards of The Garden Gro’ers harvest,
by visiting the Sunroom, just off the
Kirby Pines Lobby. Pick up some
bell peppers, hot peppers or even Dr.
Parrott’s favorite Big Boy tomatoes,
when they are available for the picking.
