ON THE PINECONE COVER
July is traditionally the month that
we begin to think about summer and
celebrating America’s national holiday,
Independence Day. It also signals the
official start of summer when Memphis
experiences longer, more humid, hotter
days. Luckily for us all, our large park-
like acreage provides us with plenty of
areas where we can step outside to stroll
under the shade of numerous tall trees,
or enjoy a day of fishing with friends
and family along the banks of our own
tranquil lake.
For those who prefer to stay indoors,
the July calendar is filled with events to
meet a variety of interests. We have our
5
th Annual 4th of July Parade, which
grows each year. July 10th gives you
the opportunity to meet and mingle with
candidates at our Political Forum. And
July 20th we will host the 5th Annual
Creative Aging Senior Variety Show,
and those are just some highlights.
So this July, when we gather to
celebrate the birth of our nation, let us
remember what the Secretary of the
Interior, Harold Ickes, said in 1941:
Celebrating America
a t K i r b y P i n e s
…“
What Constitutes an American?
Not color nor race nor religion. Not
the pedigree of his family nor the place
of his birth. Not the coincidence of his
citizenship. Not his social status nor
his bank account. Not his trade nor his
profession. An American is one who
loves justice and believes in the dignity
of man. An American is one who will
fight for his freedom and that of his
neighbor. An American is one who will
sacrifice property, ease and security
in order that he and his children may
retain the right of freedom.
This July 4th, join with me in
saluting all past, current and future
Americans as we bask in the warmth of
their actions and the season.
Happy 4th of July!

Escamilla,

Irene Baker Returns To Kirby Pines!
While Irene Baker has recently
moved into Kirby Pines, she has been a
part of our Kirby Pines family for over
30
years. She was the dietician at Kirby
Pines for many years, and lived here as a
resident for 3 1/2 years before returning
to Pennsylvania to spend time with her
children. She has two children, son
David and daughter Donna, plus three
grandsons and 1 greatgrand.
As the children became adults and
moved away, Irene decided it was time
to come home! She missed so much
about Kirby Pines and decided to return
to where she feels at home, loved, and
secure. We welcome her return with
great pleasure.
