Kirby Pines Retirement Community | The Pinecone

• 2 • The Pinecone | June 2019 ON THE PINECONE COVER Just as in May, this month we take time to honor another person who greatly influenced who we are today, our dads. Unlike Mother’s Day, which was legislated by congress in 1914, Father’s Day was not assured an official day until 1972. Regardless of why it took longer to formerly recognize a day to honor our fathers in the United States, we at Kirby Pines want to make sure these fine gentlemen are honored on their special day. In 1972 father’s alone planned for their family’s future needs, but in the last forty years, more and more children have found themselves involved with these plans. As a result, the children of aging parents have often not had a discussion about living wills, advanced care directives, the selection of a general power of attorney, health care power of attorney, financial power of attorney or their parent’s financial footing. Some parents have in fact taken the initiative to include their children in their planning, but many have not. It’s not uncommon for a child It's Father's Day a t K i r b y P i n e s Michael Escamilla, Executive Director, Kirby Pines Kirby Pines Celebrate's Father's Day! It is the beginning of summer with less rain and warmer temperatures allowing the residents to get outside and enjoy our beautiful 60-acre campus. Walking the dog around Lake Latimer, spending time with grandchildren on the playground, tending to flowers and tomatoes and simply getting to breathe in the fresh air. June also hosts a few of our favorite annual events, with Carnival Memphis and the pesky Boll Weevils visiting on the 6th and the always entertaining Kirby Pines Luau, complete with Hawaiian food and hula lessons on the 21st. The Travelers are taking a day trip to Alamo, Tennessee to an outdoor Safari Park on the 4th and to celebrate our many fathers at Kirby Pines, our first Antique Car Show on the 15th. Because we love our fathers more than words can express, we wanted to honor them on this month's covers. Our front cover features new resident, Stevens Martin with his daughter, Andrea in Harbor Town with a beautiful to ask us ifwe have a copy of awill, or life insurance policy, or information about what bank their parents use. Of course we can only share this information if given the written authorization to do so. So this Father’s Day, consider reviewing those plans you made years ago with your children. Who knows, the plan you developed over the years, my influence their plans for the future. Happy Father’s Day! 1940 Chevrolet 4-Door Sedan Special Deluxe on loan fromMr. Wayne Walker of Memphis (pictured below). Our back cover is yet another relatively new resident, Lyle Hendrix, with his daughter Terri. Since Lyle is an outdoorsman, what better place to visit than the incredible Bass Pro Shop, located downtown right on the Mighty Mississippi. So thank you to our dads and daughters for helping out and Happy Father's Day to all. Enjoy your special day!
