PINECONE COVER
making history
After years of study, scientists now
suggest that people actually can take
charge of their own happiness and boost
it through certain practices. Below are
the five things research has shown can
improve happiness.
Be grateful – the study showed
that when people take time to write
thank you notes or letters of gratitude
to people who had helped them in some
way, that the note and letter writers
reported feeling better afterwards (even
if they didn’t send the note).
Be optimistic – people in the study
who spent time just thinking about
an ideal situation, reported increased
feelings of well-being. Count your
blessings – people who write down
three good things that have happened
to them show a significant boost in
happiness.
Use your strengths – one study
asked people to identify their greatest
strengths and then try to use that
strength. For example, someone with
a good sense of humor could try telling
jokes to cheer up friends. Commit
acts of kindness – It turns out, helping
others is one of the best ways we help
ourselves feel better. Maybe it’s time
you asked Cheryl Grimes what you can
volunteer for at Kirby Pines.
This Father’s Day, I’m grateful
for all my father taught me; optimistic
that each day can always be better;
happy that I can count more than
three blessings; believe that one of my
strengths is writing these short letters
each month; and know that each day
when I come to work at Kirby Pines at
least one resident is going to help me
with a simple act of kindness – a smile.
Happy Father’s Day!
Our cover this
month features
Bertha
Mae
Newman,
a
Kirby resident
since December
of 2012. She is
shown standing
in one of her husband’s iconic Memphis
photos of the Peabody Hotel Lobby,
circa 1950. If you take a closer look,
you see she is holding a photo of that
same lobby as it stands today.
Bertha Mae was married to
commercial
photographer
Don
Newman, who’s images from the 1940s,
50
s and 60s allow us a peek at Memphis
during it’s prime, when Downtown
was the only place to be. Don passed
away in 1994, but his photographs live
on and can now be viewed online at
memphisheritage.org.
According to Bertha Mae, Don was
interested in photography at an early
age, and stayed in photography because
he loved it. “His work was all by hand.
He took the pictures, developed the
film, and did the printing himself. He
had a good life. It was an interesting life
and he liked that”.
We are lucky to have Mrs. Newman
as part of the Kirby Pines Community,
so when you see her, greet her with a
picture perfect smile and a cheerful
hello. We are also
pleased to announce
that some of the
Newman Collection
prints will soon be
displayed in the
Ready for Rehab
Wing.
