In 1969, Hunter Adams was a troubled
man who voluntarily committed
himself into a mental institution. Once
there, he finds that helping his fellow
inmates there gives him a purpose
in life. Thus inspired, he leaves the
asylum and vows to become a doctor
to help people professionally. However,
what he finds at medical school is a
sickeningly callous philosophy that
advocates an arms-length attitude to
the patients that does not address their
emotional needs or the quality of their
lives. “Patch” Adams is determined to
find a better way to help them, although
the consequences of his defiance of the
rules and the authorities are severe.

character. When McFey is killed
Church seems to be the obvious suspect
but Nick suspects there is something far
more complicated going on. McFey’s
housekeeper, daughter and various
hangers-on may all have had an interest
in seeking the old man’s demise.

Luther Heggs aspires to being a reporter
for his small town newspaper, the
Rachel Courier Express. He gets his big
break when the editor asks him to spend
the night at the Simmons mansion that,

years before, was the site of a now
famous murder-suicide. The case has
aroused local interest not only because
of the anniversary but due to the fact
that the family heir, Nick Simmons, has
returned to Rachel aiming to tear the
mansion down. Luther’s account of his
wild, ghost-ridden night in the house
leads Simmons to sue for libel, but
with the aid of his friend Kelsey they
determine what exactly happened that
night long ago and the identity of the
real killer.
