Jim and Shirley Anderson moved
to Kirby from Germantown, have been
married 55 years and have 4 children, 4
grandchildren, and 1 great grand.
Both Jim and Shirley worked
outside the home with Jim earning a
BS Degree in Geography and History
and a MS Degree in Education
Administration from the University of
Memphis. For 38 years, Jim was part
of the Shelby County School System,
rising to Superintendent before he
retired in 1997. Shirley was part of the
Shelby County School System as well,
working as a School Secretary.
Jim likes golf, fishing, and
wilderness/outback trail work. Shirley
enjoys tennis, pickle ball, cards,
dominoes, line dancing, Bible study,
reading, and socializing. She also
enjoys volunteer work. Their travels
include Rome, Venice, Paris, London,
Scotland, and U.S. Northwest. Jim
also has fond memories of summer
employment as a Smokejumper for the
U.S. Forest Service, making more than
50
parachute jumps.
This high-energy couple is a
welcomed addition to Kirby Pines.
Their decision to join us adds more
faces to our pool of volunteers and, in
turn, Jim and Shirley will benefit from
all that our community offers.

Don & Laura Cook
It’s a natural lift to one’s spirits to
know that Laura Cook’s most interesting
thing in her past is being married to
husband, Donald, for 65 years. He kept
her laughing and happy. Life doesn’t
get much better than that! Donald and
Laura are native Memphians. They had
2
children who were adopted as infants,
4
grandchildren and an anticipated great
grand daughter on the way.
Donald’s career was that of a
Commercial Contractor. His Dad taught
him brick layer techniques and he was
in business with his Dad for 45 years
as Everett Cook & Sons. The firm
included not only Donald and his Dad,
but his brothers as well. Donald was
President of the firm that grew to be the
largest masonry contractors in the area.
Laura also worked at the firm as a part-
time secretary but she characterizes her
assignments as a “go-fer”.
Golf, cards, and bridge are favorite
pastimes for Donald; Laura enjoys
cooking, spending time with family
and friends, reading, and volunteering
at their church. She was once a first-
rate trumpet player and excellent
seamstress.
Kirby Pines is pleased to welcome
Donald and Laura to our community,
and look forward to having you as an
active member of our “family”.
Pat Kelly & Myrtle Kelly
New residents, Myrtle Kelly and
her son, Pat Kelly, moved from Chicago
to Memphis in 1956. Myrtle was a
homemaker, enjoying her rose garden and
other flowers. She also enjoys working
crossword puzzles and doing needlepoint.
Pat Kelly served in the Air Force,
stationed in Alaska. In civilian life, he
worked for 21 years for Goldsmith’s as
Manager of the Drapery Workroom and
Upholstery Division. He also owned
and operated Fabric Junction in Bartlett
for 10 years; and managed Interstate
Plywood Top Shop and Cabinet Shop
for 18 years until retirement. Pat enjoys
woodworking, working with his hands,
and being outdoors. He has been an adult
leader in the Boy Scouts of America for
49
years and, in that capacity, made 5
hikes of more than 50 miles each at the
Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Interesting tidbits about Pat include
living as a civilian in Viet Nam; skillful at
operating a sewing machine; and driving
the AlCan Highway several times as he
traveled to every corner of Alaska.
Kirby Pines welcomes Myrtle Kelly
and her son, Pat. With Pat’s experience
and interest in woodworking, he will be
pleased to meet our residents who are
familiar with the professionally equipped
work shop. We wish these new residents
many years of enjoyment in the range of
activities available in our community.
