Kellye Cash, former Miss America, sings a song
that presents a modern day telling of the
Widow’s Mite told in scripture.* The lyrics are:
What an appropriate comparison. Many
times we think who we are and what we
do makes little difference. So many others
are so prominent and have so much.
How could our small contribution ever
count? Too often this is the judgment of
those around us. We worship the rich and
powerful and famous. They surely are the
ones who make significant contributions
and should therefore receive the acclaim.
However, we need to understand that
invisible eyes may be watching. Unnoticed
realities may be close at hand. When no
Mr. Jones gave two thousand in the offering;
the audience gave thunderous applause.
Someone else took out a check and said, “I’ll double that!”
The people almost shouted down the walls.
Then an old widowed lady walked forward;
there was silence when it jingled in the pan.
You could hear a pin drop after she gave it.
That’s when I heard the clapping of the Nail Scarred Hands.
The polished singer left them from the stage
when she gave her rendition of “Amazing Grace.”
After the standing ovation you could see a smile on every face.
The old janitor gives praise in every classroom,
keeps time as he empties out the can.
There’s never a soul there to hear him,
but he can hear the clapping of the Nail Scarred Hands.
Angels rejoice in Heaven over the gift of one man.
When it’s safe in the arms of the Shepherd,
you can hear the clapping of the Nail Scarred Hands.
one else sees us or cares about our tiny
contribution to the world around us, we
need to remember that God is strategically
in touch. He always sees who we are and
what we do. To Him we are important.
When the world slips into silence and
wants to ignore us, He does not. If our ears
are open and our hearts receptive, we’ll be
able to detect His approval. We’ll quietly
hear “the clapping of the Nail Scarred
Hands.”
Have you ever received Heaven’s
applause? Is there anything you have ever
done that would merit God’s praise and
commendation? It’s not just big things
that draw Divine acknowledgement.
Remember the Lord’s statement, “You
were faithful over a few things, I will make
you ruler over many things.”**
I long for the daywhen Imay hear Heaven’s
response. Nothing can be greater than
hearing “the clapping of the Nail Scarred
Hands” over the simplest of actions done
in His name and for His honor. I keep
listening!
Will you?
Till next time,
Don Johnson, Kirby Pines Chaplain
