Kirby Pines Retirement Community | The Pinecone

The Pinecone | August 2020 • 3 • New Resident Bios written by resident, Peggy Gatlin welcome to 3535 Kirby Road • Memphis, TN 38115 Lana Prescott has lived in the Memphis area throughout her life and has moved to Kirby Pines Retirement Community from her home in Germantown. She graduated from Memphis State University in 1976 with a BA. She then went on to earn a Masters in Social Work with an endorsement in Gerontology at The University of Tennessee. Lana worked as a medical social worker and was director of the “Shelter for Women and Children” at the Salvation Army. Traveling has been a priority in Lana’s life. Her destinations include Ireland, Scotland, England, Denmark, South America, Japan, Hong Kong, Alaska, Hawaii, and many others. For sure, she has many stories from these journeys. Lana says that her friends would describe her as trustworthy, loyal, smart, curious, strong willed, funny and goofy. The funny and goofy is understandable when she tells you she is a collector of “dust bunnies.” For exercise, Lana walks. She also enjoys visiting her friends and spending time reading and thinking. She is very proud of overcoming serious injuries to become independent and able to walk again. Lana is definitely a fit for our retirement community. We extend a very warm and cordial welcome to her and wish her the very best in her new home. We are so elated she chose Kirby Pines and know she is going to enjoy making new friends and participating in our enrichment activities. Lana Prescott Lynn & Johnnie Haley Johnnie and Lynn Haley recently moved to Kirby Pines from their home in Amory, Mississippi. They have two sons and two grandchildren. Johnnie earned his B.A. degree fromMis- sissippi State University in 1966, Lynn earned her B.S degree from Mississippi College for Women in 1967, and Johnnie earned his law degree (Juris Doctor) from Ole Miss in 1973. Johnnie served on active duty with the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force over a 21-year military career, ending with his retirement from the JAG Corps in 1993. They then moved to Starkville, Mississip- pi, where Johnnie served as the Deputy General Counsel and litigation attorney for Mississippi State University until his retirement in 2010. During their 52 years of marriage, they have lived in Georgia, Texas, Mississip- pi, Alabama (3 times), Missouri, Louisi- ana, Kansas, Hawaii, and North Dakota. These places and the people they knew at each place provided them with many happy memories and enriched their lives in countless ways. Lynn loves cooking, gardening, and lis- tening to American Family Talk Radio programs. Johnnie loved playing golf for many years but can’t handle the heat any longer. He loves watching NCAA and NFL football games and is looking for- ward to being a Memphis Redbirds’ fan. We extend a very warm Kirby Pines’ welcome to the Haleys and are glad they chose us for this chapter in their life. Jane Hodge A warm welcome goes to new resident Jane Hodge. Jane moved from her former home in Collierville, TN. She is the moth- er of three daughters, grandmother to nine and great grandmother to seven. She is also looking forward to three more great- grands before the end of 2020. She is very proud of her family including three of the greatest sons-in-laws ever. Jane went to Northwest Junior College and earned an associate degree in business. Her career in business was with Firestone, now Bridgestone, as transportation manager. She was with them for 25 years, much of her career was in the Chicago area cover- ing parts of nine states. For enjoyment, Jane likes to travel, read, and follow games on Facebook. Her trav- els include six continents, 47 states and 41 countries. Her favorite destination is Scot- land where she has visited twice. Her daily reading habit and love of books make her a good fit for our “Book Baggers.” When you meet Jane, you will know quickly why she was voted class favorite her senior year in high school. In her busi- ness career with Firestone, she was winner of the “President’s Award” in 1997. To stay active, Jane’s favorite form of ex- ercise is walking. She also collects minia- ture tea sets which we can be sure she has found just the right place for display in her new home. When you see Jane out and about in our beautiful community, extend her a special welcome. We are so happy to have her as a new Kirby Pines’ resident.
