Kirby Pines Retirement Community | The Pinecone

The Pinecone | August 2026 • 5 • THIS SUMMER Staying Active, Safe & Connected Summer brings longer days, warmer weather, and countless opportunities to enjoy the activities we love. Whether it’s taking a morning walk, tending a flower garden, attending family gatherings, or simply enjoying time outdoors with friends, summer is a season that encourages us to stay engaged and active. Remaining active is important at every age, and even small amounts of daily movement can make a meaningful difference in overall health and well-being. Physical Therapy can help residents maintain strength, balance, and mobility, making it easier to participate in favorite summer activities while reducing the risk of falls. Walking programs, balance exercises, and individualized strengthening routines can help improve confidence and independence. Occupational Therapy focuses on helping individuals safely perform everyday activities that bring purpose and enjoyment to life. During the summer months, this may include gardening, cooking seasonal recipes, participating in community events, or learning strategies to conserve energy during hot weather. Occupational therapists can also recommend adaptive equipment and techniques that make daily tasks easier and safer. Summer is also a wonderful time for social engagement. Staying connected with others supports emotional health and cognitive wellness. Speech Therapy plays an important role in helping residents maintain communication skills, memory, problem- solving abilities, and safe swallowing. Whether participating in conversations with friends, enjoying family visits, or attending community activities, strong communication skills help keep us BRR connected to the people and experiences that matter most. As temperatures rise, it is also important to remember a few summer safety tips. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen when outdoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Taking frequent breaks and choosing cooler times of day for outdoor activities can help everyone stay comfortable and safe. This summer, challenge yourself to try something new, reconnect with a favorite hobby, or spend a little extra time outdoors. Every step taken, conversation shared, and activity enjoyed contributes to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. Our therapy team is proud to support residents in maintaining independence, maximizing function, and making the most of every season. Here’s to a safe, active, and enjoyable summer! “Sun is shining. Weather is sweet. Make you wanna move your dancing feet.” – Bob Marley
