His performance ranges from Jerry Lee Lewis-style on the piano to old-fashioned country, gospel and rock- and-roll. Steve also enjoys sing-along and is an expert at inspiring audience participation. Steve is happy to take re- quests. His favorites are up tempo, toe tapping tunes, such as Floyd Kramer classics and old time gospel. Don’t miss him in the PAC at 6:00 pm and Live TV Channel 10. Jan 9 & 23: Saturday Triva The Kirby Pines Trivia Group meets at 6:15 pm in The Chapel on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. All residents are welcome to attend this noncompetitive activity, and are en- couraged to participate, or just listen and enjoy. Usually, but not always, there will be a THEME for each of the meet- ings. Trivia questions can be presented on any topic. Jan 12: Travelers Present Carol Stowell will give a Power Point presentation on three Japanese cities that differ considerably from the more cosmopolitan Tokyo discussed in Oc- tober.. Takayama and Kanazawa, cities relatively unscathed by World War II, contain traces of the Samurai era, while Kyoto is the original cultural capital of Japan. The country’s phenomenal artist- ry is shown in its magnificent gardens, amazing ceramics, lacquerware and gold-leaf technology and striking archi- tecture. Pride and skill are greatly influ- enced by the Shinto love of nature and the Buddhist ideal of paradise. Jan 12: Just Friends While visiting his hometown during Christmas, a man comes face-to-face with his old high school crush whom he was best friends with -- a woman whose rejection of him turned him into a fero- cious womanizer. Jan 12 : Birthday Night with Just Friends Be sure and join Just Friends Band on Birthday Night to hear some Jazz, Vin- tage Standards, & Rock – N – Roll at 6:30 in PAC or on Live TV Channel 10. Jan 13: Garden Club Meeting There will be no meeting this month. We will be planting seed March 3rd. We usually meet in the Greenhouse every 2nd Wednesday of every month at 10:30 am rain or shine and dig in! Jan 13: Second Hand Lions A shy adolescent boy, Walter, is taken by his greedy mother to spend the summer with his two hard-boiled great-uncles, Hub and Garth, who are rumored to pos- sess a great fortune. At first, the two old men, both set in their ways, find Walter's presence a nuisance, but they eventually warm up to the boy and regale him with tall tales from their past. Jan 15 : Music with The Side-Street Steppers The Side Street Steppers are a page from America’s past, playing rare and popular music from the 1920s and 30s. Dubbed the Golden Age of Gramophone Re- cording, the two decades between 1920 andWorldWar II saw the rise of jazz and the birth of the blues, the demise of rag- time and the emergence of hillbilly mu- sic that would become known through the world as country music. The Side Street Steppers present a pastiche of this transformation of the American musi- cal landscape, performing on vintage and homemade instruments. Get ready for plenty of hip-shaking, foot stompin’, caterwauling and croonin’. Enjoy this fun group at 6:00 pm in the PAC or on Live TV Channel 10. Jan 19: A League Of Their Own As America's stock of athletic young men is depleted during World War II, a professional all-female baseball league springs up in the Midwest, funded by publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey. Competitive sisters Dottie Hin- son and Kit Keller spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino and grumpy has- been coach Jimmy Dugan on their way to fame. Our support group meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month in the Ante Room at 10:00 am. Jan 20: Dances with Wolves A Civil War soldier develops a rela- tionship with a band of Lakota Indi- ans. Attracted by the simplicity of their lifestyle, he chooses to leave his former life behind to be with them. Having ob- served him, they give the name Dances With Wolves. Soon he is a welcomed member of the tribe and falls in love with a white woman who has been raised in the tribe. Tragedy results when Union soldiers arrive with designs on the land.
