Senior community activity directors can readily affirm
the social and cognitive benefits for their residents of
arts engagement from Creative Aging activities and
performances. Now a new study shows that humor
and laughter may also help combat memory loss in
older adults.
“
It’s simple, the less stress you have, the better your memory,” one of the study’s
authors, Lee Berk, said in a Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology
news release. “Humor reduces detrimental stress hormones like cortisol that decreases
memory (brain cells), lowers your blood pressure and increases blood flow and improves
your mood state. The act of laughter - or simply enjoying some humor - increases the
release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain, which provides a sense of pleasure
and reward.
On July 20, Creative Aging will offer an afternoon of light hearted entertainment
brimming with laughter – which Dr. Berk might possibly recommend as a stress remedy
complete with pleasurable side benefits.
It’s Creative Aging’s 5th Annual Senior Variety Show - a charming mix of vocalists,
musicians, dancers and comedians. The talent takes the stage starting at 3 p.m. at the
Kirby Pines Performing Arts Center, 3535 Kirby Road. Those appearing in this inspiring
showcase of senior talent were handpicked by Creative Aging “talent scouts.” They
represent senior communities from across the city.
Also on the bill of fare are the culinary talents of Kirby Pines Executive Chef, Pete
Tumminia. His hand-crafted treats, guaranteed to delight audience members, will
include Chocolate Pots de Crème, crème brûlée, Italian Zabaglione over fresh
berries, chocolate chip cookie cups filled with chocolate mousse, pecan pie tartlets
and assorted dessert shot parfaits.
Tickets are $10 and available at the door (cash or check). The matinee includes door
prizes as well as the scrumptious desserts. Convenient parking is free and shuttle service
will be provided. Proceeds from the event benefit Creative Aging in its ongoing work
to bring arts experiences to life where seniors live.
