SOCIAL WELLNESS
Month!
Social Wellness
refers to one’s ability to interact with people around
them. It involves using good communications skills, having meaningful
relationships, respecting yourself and others, and creating a support system
that includes family members and friends.
Social wellness follows these tenets:
•
It is better to contribute to the common welfare of our community than to
think only of ourselves.
•
It is better to live in harmony with others and our environment than to live
in conflict with them.
The Path to Social Wellness
If you are a person engaged in the process of social wellness, you see the
value in living in harmony with your fellow human beings, seeking positive,
interdependent relationships with others, and developing healthy behaviors.
You are also willing to actively seek out ways to preserve the beauty and
balance of nature and the community.
Are you engaged in the process of social wellness?
•
Do I plan time to be with my family and friends?
•
Do I enjoy the time I spend with others?
•
Are my relationships with others positive and rewarding?
•
Do I explore diversity by interacting with people of other cultures,
backgrounds, and beliefs?
If you answered “No” to any of the questions, it may indicate an area where
you need to improve the state of your social wellness.
“
I love poetry and I love
to write poetry and I
think it is a good way for
people to get together
to recite their poems and
gives people a chance
to express themselves.”
–
Nita Heffernan on the First
Monday Poetry Group
“
It’s something new to
me and I’m learning with
the other guys helping
me. It is fulfilling because
it gives me a chance
to do things for other
people.”
–
Charles Olree on the
Hobby Pines Group
“
I’ve been line dancing
for years, and when I
moved to Kirby, I brought
my three pairs of boots
and joined right in. That’s
my favorite activity. You
get Exercise, have fun
and make friends.”
–
Anita Deckleman on
Line Dancing
“
I’m in my second
childhood here at Kirby,
I could never get
enough movies as a
kid. I enjoy them very
much and appreciate
the convenience of not
having to leave the
facility to see them.”
–
Richard Randall on
Weekend Movies
“
You get to show off, act
silly and get to know new
people.”
–
Diane Short on the
Ham-ateurs
“
I like it because I enjoy
the comradery and it is
a good opportunity to
work on my projects while
visiting with and making
new friends. We have so
many kinds of needlework
going on and we enjoy
getting to see what our
friends are working on.”

Needle Arts Group
Social Wellness is the ability to relate to and connect with other people in our world. Our ability to establish
and maintain positive relationships with family, friends and co-workers contributes to our Social Wellness.
