• 2 • The Pinecone | July 2020 ON THE PINECONE COVER Summer is officiallyhere!Although it sneaked in towards the end of June, the unofficial hotter, dryer weather arrived sometime during spring. Luckily for us all, our large trees and park like acreage, provides us with plenty of areas where we can step outside to stroll under the shade of numerous majestic trees. This summer will of course be different during the current Coivd-19 pandemic, but try not to let the hotter temperature nor the daily news bring you down. The current Covid-19 crisis continues to have a significant impact not only on visits with your families, but also on unemployment, the economy and people’s lives in general. Remember in every crisis, doubt or confusion – it is important to take the higher path. The path of compassion, courage, understanding and love for one another. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. Independence means being able to take care of your own needs and to make and assume responsibility for your decisions while considering both the people around you and your environment. Living in a community likeKirby Pines, however, we do depend on people. We depend on friends, family and staff for entertainment, companionship and care. But also, as a community where a month of mourning in recognition of all we have lost during this pandemic. However, we must also remember the American patriots of past centuries, who gave their lives so that we could enjoy the fruits of a better country. This July, join me in saluting all past, current and future Americans as we bask in the warmth of their actions and the season. Yes, summer is officially here. we look out for one another. Even in the hardest of times we want everyone at Kirby Pines to feel safe, happy and loved. Our front cover features Dr. Charles Parrott, the infamous leader of our Annual 4th of July Parade, cruising in his red, white and blue. And though we must practice safe distancing this year with no parade, we still have reason to celebrate our incredible community. Our back cover reflects just how much we all consider the people around us and our safe, happy and loving environment. The photos are from past parades, but remind us of how strong we are as a whole. God Bless America! Sheryl and Mark Maxwell - July 2016
