March has arrived and warm sunny days are sure to
follow. Gone are the Fall and Winter attention to jack-o-
lanterns and treat-or-treat; to Thanksgiving with family
coming together; followed by Christmas and New Year’s
day with the celebrating; and, finally, the Super Bowl. What
lies ahead are unhurried days on the beach, cook-outs, and
napping in the hammock. This month I’ve interviewed
Kirby Pines traveling residents, Guy and Connie Carter and
Bogie, their beloved Basset Hound. They have toured 20
National Parks and 9 National Monuments of the U.S. and
5
National Parks of Canada. Their travels have taken them
to Hawaii, Alaska, and 33 other States.
Orman Guy Carter, Jr. (nickname Boots) was born in
1943
to Odie Owen Carter and Orman Guy Carter. His Dad
left school after 6th grade and worked at a gravel pit. His
Mom was an accredited judge at flower shows and also
worked at Lowenstein Department Store in the china, silver,
and flower arrangement sections. Guy Carter has a B.S.
Degree in Engineering Technology; from 1966 to 1970, he
served in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Vietnam with the
1972
nd Communication Squadron which was responsible
for providing classified and unclassified communications
for the Air Force and other services. As an engineer working
for Martin Marietta Aerospace he was sent to North Dakota
to work as a field engineer, installing the Sprint Missile
Systems. The Sprint was a nuclear-armed defense Anti-
Ballistic Missile, one component of a U.S. defense system
again Soviet ICBMs. He retired in 2006 after fifteen years as

Connie Ruth Cochran Carter was born December 1942
to Anne Graham Cochran and Clifford Bridgforth Cochran.
Connie was an avid horse lover, riding and showing hunters
and jumpers in local horse shows, including the Germantown
Charity Horse Show. She has a BS Degree in Elementary
Education from Memphis State University. Connie taught
in the Shelby County School System and other schools in
TN, LA, FL, KS, and SD, teaching kindergarten through
5
th grade. In retirement, Connie is Head of Publicity for
the River M Sams; she and Guy jointly write the monthly
newsletter and take the pictures for the newsletter. She also
is active in the Kirby Pines NeedleArts Group andAdvanced
Water Aerobics. Guy and Connie met at a Memphis State
fraternity party, and married on Thanksgiving Day in 1964.
They have a son, Nathan Guy Carter, and a daughter, Mollie
Ann Carter Saxon. Guy and Connie will celebrate their 50th
anniversary this year.
Life is good for Guy and Connie Carter. They have
been blessed with good health, accomplished children,
and beautiful grandchildren. They are generous in their
willingness to share knowledge of sights to see across
the U.S. and Canada; routes to take; pitfalls to avoid.
Their travels have enabled them to see God’s handiwork
of majestic mountains, geysers, and glaciers. Kirby Pines
wishes Guy and Connie many more years of safe travel
as they visit breathtaking natural creations in the U.S. and
Canada.
