The Pinecone | November 2020 • 3 • welcome to 3535 Kirby Road • Memphis, TN 38115 John Travis Thornton was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi and moved to Kirby Pines from his home in Houston, Mississippi. He and his late wife, Virginia, were married 57 years. He says his marriage to his wife is what he is most proud of. They have one son, Robert. John graduated from Delta State University in 1954 and received his Masters from Mississippi College. He spent his career in education. John was also in the Army, Spec 4 and was stationed at Darby Military Community outside Livorno, Italy. He enjoys playing bridge, his favorite author is crime fiction writer, Michael Connelly, who is most known for creating the "Bosch" novels. His favorite song is "One Moment In Time" and his favorite food is Spanish Noodles - you may have to ask him about that. Welcome, John! We hope you find moving to Kirby Pines was a great decision and that you soon are able to make many new friends on the way. Make sure you make John feel right at home and give him a smile! John Thornton Frances Adams Frances Adams was born in Monette, Arkansas, but comes to Kirby Pines from her home in West Memphis, Arkansas. She has two children, two grandchildren and four great-grands. Frances worked in real estate sales for 29 years for Coldwell Banker Heritage Homes. Her proudest accomplishment, however, was holding the most positions of leadership in the Emmaus Walks in Arkansas. Frances is a fan of the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team, and enjoys watching tennis and golf on TV. She also likes to do crosswords and playing dominoes and card games. She has traveled through much of the United States. Her favorite trips include San Francisco, Hawaii and the Holy Land. Her favorite movie is "Gone with the Wind" and enjoys Big Band music, including Harry James. Her friends would describe her as friendly, Christian and "sorta shy". We are so glad Frances has decided to make Kirby Pines Retirement Community her home. If you happen to see her in the hallway or dining room, make sure you greet her with a big Kirby welcome! Joyce Casada Joyce Casada was born on a farm outside of Springfield, Missouri and moved to Kirby Pines from her Memphis home. She was married 51 years to her late husband, Richard, has two children, three grandchildren and three great- grands. Joyce graduated in 1956 from Southwest Missouri State with a Bachelors Degree in Education. She worked 35 years as an elementary school teacher. She says she started teaching at age 17 in a one room schoolhouse with grades 1 thru 8 in Missouri. She went on to teach in a consolidated school, Memphis City Schools and Memphis Hebrew Academy. She also taught children's Bible classes for over 50 years. Her hobbies include sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, art and singing - she was a member of the Sweet Adeline's for 26 years. Her favorite vacation was a trip to Yellowstone when their children were teenagers. Joyce collects China, pretty glass dishes and odds & ends, antiques and railroad memorabilia. Her husband was a railroad signalman. Joyce, we are thrilled you are here andwe have the feeling you will have plenty of opportunity to meet many people based on your hobbies and interest alone!
