Kirby Pines Retirement Community | The Pinecone

• 2 • The Pinecone | October 2020 ON THE PINECONE COVER In September, we reflected on the past thirty- seven years of Kirby Pines, and expressed our thankfulness for the “unity” provided to make Kirby Pines, what so many refer to as “the best retirement community in Memphis”. In fact, Kirby Pines was once again selected by the readers of the Commercial Appeal as “THE BEST Retirement Community” for the fourteenth consecutive year in the tristate area; and by the Memphis Business Journal as The TOP Multi Service Retirement Community for the eleventh consecutive year. Of course, these awards of recognition would not be possible if it weren’t for the individuals who live and work at Kirby Pines. And what better way to begin the month, than by acknowledging the International Day of the Older Person, October 1st. Designated by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1990, all countries are encouraged to enable men and women to age with dignity and to integrate aging issues into everyday life. Kirby Pines is a daily example of doing just this. This month we also celebrate: October 2nd, National Custodial Worker’s Day – a day when we should all make an effort to thank the men and women in our housekeeping and laundry We Are Memphis Most a t K i r b y P i n e s Michael Escamilla, Executive Director, Kirby Pines Cooler Temps and Warmer Colors at Kirby Pines Kirby Pines Retirement LifeCare is managed by: BOARD OF D I R ECTOR S Dr. James Latimer, Chairman Mr. Rudy Herzke, President Mr. Berry Terry, Secretary/Treasurer Mr. Larry Braughton Rev. It is a perfect time of year at Kirby Pines to step outside and take a walk. Our beautiful 60-acre campus changes every day as green changes to yellow, yellow to red, red to orange and brown. Also with the cooler temperatures, it's time to head to our greenhouse to store some house plants, or get out to the garden and plant your greens and lettuce with the Garden Club. It's also a great time to join one of Mary Hand's exercise classes (see page 4) to get a jump on over-indulging during the holidays. Or get to the Arts & Crafts Room, to make a fall wreath for your door, or paint a colorful landscape. Now is also the perfect time to join one of our many groups and clubs. The Poetry Group, the Book Baggers, the Creative Writing class, or the Travelers. Play Mah Jongg or Board Games. Try your hand at Saturday Night Trivia, take your best shot with the Billiard Group, build something in the Hobby Shop, or join the Needle Arts Group. Attend a religious service or sing with the Entertainer's Chorus. There is always something to do, right outside your door. department for the hard work they do for us each day; October 4-10th is National Health Care Food Service Week, these dedicated employees are an essential part of our integrated services; October 25th- 31sth is National Pastoral Care week, and we should all make time to thank our Chaplin, Don Johnson, and the numerous residents that coordinate such activities as our Men’s Bible Study group and Thursday night Vespers. Please join me in thanking these many individuals for the time they dedicate to make a difference in our life. You can join this amazing group on October 24th, which is Make a Difference Day. After all, we all have the ability to do something small that makes a difference. And speaking of right outside your door, check out all of our wonderful participants in our very first Kirby Pines Costume Contest! Our first prize and front cover winner, is our Busy Bee, Marilyn Wray, buzzing around our front entrance. Our back cover and second place winners are Jane and Bob Longfield, who put the right pops of color in their outfits. And we have a 3rd place tie with new residents, Janie and Marty Kocman - see below - who got creative and entertained. We thank everyone who participated - see all photos on page 20. Janie & Marty Kocman are simply adorable!
