The Pinecone | October 2026 • 5 • BREAST CANCER Know the Signs at Any Age: Age does not reduce breast cancer risk. Risk increases with age, so awareness remains important throughout later life. Early attention to a new breast change can support earlier evaluation and more treatment choices. KnowWhat toWatch For • A new lump in the breast or underarm • Thickening, swelling, or a change in breast size or shape • Dimpling, redness, flaky skin, or other skin changes • Nipple pain, pulling inward, or discharge other than breast milk • Persistent breast pain or any change that is new for you Do not wait for pain. Many breast cancers do not cause pain. Most breast changes are not cancer, but a healthcare professional should evaluate any new or unusual change promptly. Screening Is a Personal Health Decision For women ages 40 through 74, theU.S. Preventive ServicesTask Force recommends a mammogram every two years. For women age 75 and older, evidence is not sufficient to recommend one schedule for everyone. The decision should be individualized with a healthcare provider based on overall health, prior screening, personal and family history, life expectancy, and the resident’s preferences. HowContinuing Care Retirement Communities Can Help • Offer private, respectful education that includes residents of every ability level. • Encourage residents to report changes without embarrassment or delay. • Help coordinate appointments, transportation, and follow-up when requested. • Use person-centered communication and include the resident’s chosen support person when appropriate. • Remember that men can also develop breast cancer and should report new breast or nipple changes. A Simple October Reminder Know your normal. Notice a change. Speak up promptly. If you are unsure whether you are due for a mammogram, ask your healthcare provider to review your history and help you decide what is right for you.
