While changes in strength, balance, vision, medications, and health conditions can increase fall risk, many falls can be prevented. Falls Prevention Awareness Month is an opportunity to recognize risks and take simple steps to help older adults remain safe, active, and independent. KnowYour Fall Risks Strength and balance: Weakness, decreased endurance, or difficulty walking can affect stability. Medications: Some medications may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in blood pressure. Vision: Changes in vision or depth perception can make obstacles and changes in surfaces harder to identify. Footwear: Choose supportive, properly fitting shoes with non-slip soles. Home environment: Remove clutter, secure or remove loose rugs, improve lighting, and keep frequently used items within easy reach. Changes in health: Report new dizziness, weakness, falls, or near falls to your healthcare provider. KeepMoving! Regular physical activity is one of the most important ways to maintain mobility. Activities that improve leg strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance can help support safer movement and continued participation in everyday activities. HowCan Therapy Help? Physical and occupational therapy can play an important role in fall prevention. Therapists can assess strength, balance, walking, transfers, daily activities, equipment needs, and environmental safety. They can also recommend individualized exercises and strategies to reduce fall risk.
