April Brings Smiles!
On the Cover
April means fun
times at Kirby Pines. The
month starts off with April
Fool’s Day, and while not
everyone appreciates a good
joke, laughter is a good way
to get out of the winter blahs.
Immediately following, on
April 2nd, is National Peanut Butter
and Jelly Day. I don’t know about
you, but this in itself sounds like
an April Fool’s Day left over. Well
it’s not, there is actually a day set
aside to remind everyone of this
childhood treat and of the nutritional
value of this simple sandwich. Do
you suppose the Resident Food
Committee has asked for this treat
on the April menu?
Then beginning April 14, we
celebrate National Library Week.
This is a perfect time to check out
a book from our very own library,
as well as a great time to donate any
books you have collecting dust on
your shelves. If you are anxious to
get out and enjoy the spring weather,
then join the Kirby Garden Club
as they celebrate National
Gardening Week April 15-
21.
Already in full swing,
the Garden Club is busy
planting in the greenhouse
and preparing their garden
plots.Volunteer Recognition
Day is April 20th, and this
year we are honoring our Kirby
volunteers with a special lunch at
the Lichterman Nature Center. This
location is bound to put a smile on
everyone’s face. If you want to
become a Kirby Volunteer, please
contact Cheryl Grimes for a list of
volunteer opportunities.
Ending the month, on
April 30th, is National Hairstyle
Appreciation Day. So call ahead
to make your appointments at
Christie’s Coiffures, located here
at Kirby Pines. I did, but was told
I didn’t need an appointment for a
three minute haircut. Have fun, it’s
April.
Michael Escamilla
Michael Escamilla
Executive Director, Kirby Pines
Lee Brown has only been a
resident of the Kirby Pines Community
for about 9 months, but you can see by
the look on her face, she is truly enjoying
herself! Although as she can attest, it’s
hard not to smile when you spend the
morning with the Memphis Redbirds’ own
Rockey Redbird.
Lee and Rockey have more in
common than just their love of baseball,
though. Lee’s late husband Don played
A Rockin’ Home Run
third base in the Old Cotton States League
on an early farm team for the St. Louis
Cardinals. They actually met in Natchez,
Mississippi, where he was playing one
summer while in college, and were married
51
wonderful years in which baseball
played a large role.
Lee has attended several Redbirds’
games at AutoZone Park and admits when
it’s a little quiet around the apartment,
she’ll even turn a game on just to hear the
cheer of the crowd and the crack of the
bat, whether she’s watching or not. The
familiar sounds always spark memories of
good times and of her husband Don, who,
she bashfully confesses after all, ended up
a Cubs fan.
Thank you Lee (and Rockey the
Redbird) for a great morning of stories and
laughter. We are so happy that you are a
part of our Kirby Pines family.
