Summer is officially here! Even
without a calendar, the higher
temperatures let us all know summer
has arrived. This is certainly true for
Sammy” who has agreed to share
some of his ideas on how to survive
the “Dog Days of Summer”. Below
is what Sammy asked me to write for
him, as his paws were just a bit too big
to hit only one letter at a time on the
keyboard.
First of all – enjoy yourself. After
all, these are the DOG days of summer.
If you’re hot, why not stretch out on the
cold marble floor in the lobby. I found
this to be very relaxing and my belly
loved the refreshing cool tile.
Give yourself some time to
understand what the “Green Book” is
all about. I haven’t read it all, but it
seems to list rules you should follow if
you want to get a treat. Isn’t it all about
treats anyway?
Remember that a good positive
attitude will make even the most hot
and humid day more bearable.

Take time to talk to the new residents
or employees. I know that when my
roommate Michael talks to me, even
if I don’t understand all the words, I
understand the tone of his voice. My
tail usually wags because I am always a
good boy!
Most of all take care of yourself
when it’s hot outside. Stay indoors
where it is nice and cool and only go
outside when you have to do your
business. Remember, if you take care
of yourself, then you can continue to
take care of me, and together we can
grow older and live life to the fullest!
Licks and tail wags, Sammy.
This month’s cover is in honor of the
Dog Days of Summer, so we decided to
have a little fun with our residents and
their fuzzy and furry counterparts.
As you can see in the picture below,
getting our residents and their pups to sit
and pose with any form of discipline or
order is a job best left to a professional.
However, we still wanted people to see
our “Best In Show” right here at Kirby
Pines, so we held a Pinecone
Cover Contest, featuring
residents and their dogs.
There was quite a mix in
both breed and personality,
and the judging was
extremely difficult to decide
upon one prized pooch and
it’s proud owner.
In the end, our cover models are
Wanda Semsch and her little Gracie. It
did take a few test shots to get Gracie
to warm up to the camera, but with
Wanda’s help and enthusiasm, she
simply followed suit and sat up for the
occasion.
Because all of our models were so
fabulous, we have included the rest of
the pictures throughout this month’s
magazine, including Harley Thurmond
in his t-shirt on the back!
