Allow
me
to
introduce you to a
very special group at
Kirby Pines. They
love to hear someone
read a good poem. They call themselves The
First Monday Poetry Group [they say, “to
remind them when they meet”]. The group
formed in 2011 to hear poetry read by Judith
Thomson of Creative Aging. Poetry Group
member Dorothy Sue Lovejoy summed up
how she felt about Judith’s poetry readings.
JUDITH’S VOICE
By Dorothy Sue Lovejoy
The birds hush their singing,
When Judith speaks –
The clear tones of the organ are silent,
When Judith speaks –
The kitten’s purring is as soft as velvet,
When Judith speaks –
The breezes whisper lightly together,
When Judith speaks –
I bow my head in reverence,
When Judith speaks –
Her beautiful voice blesses us all,
When Judith speaks.
Judith moved to North Carolina
early in 2012, but the little band of poetry
lovers continued to meet and develop a
format that suited their needs. At their first
Monday of the month meeting, they read
and discuss the chosen study poem which
is featured in the Pinecone. Members of
the group take turns reading their original
work that is featured monthly on the Poets’
Corner bulletin board in the post office.
The meeting hour is rounded out with
the reading and recitation of poems the
members have written, memorized or want
to share. Many members simply come to
hear the poems read aloud. So whether
you read, write, recite or listen, if you love
poetry, you are welcome.
As the number of original poems
grew, the group decided to publish them as
First Fruits” to be offered for sale with the
proceeds to be donated to the Kirby Pines
Library Fund to establish a Poets’ Corner
in the library. The goal is to increase the
number of poetry books held by the library
and to encourage the love of poetry in future
residents at Kirby Pines.
