March 2013
Springtime weather permits
lots of outside activities like fishing
in the lake, helping in the gardens,
and walking the beautiful trails
around Kirby Pines. Fresh air and
sunshine are always welcomed after
all those indoor winter months.
Speaking of walking, Walk
with Ease, an Arthritis Foundation
program, was offered last fall
for the first time and nine people
participated on a regular basis and six
participants finished the course. We
started with a ten-minute walk, three
times a week. That first walk was
very hard for some, requiring a short
rest to catch their breath. Several
people wondered if they were strong
enough to walk or worried about
their balance and shortness of breath.
We began with a ten-minute walk the
first week
Guy and Connie
Carter, a couple here
at Kirby Pines, know
the comfort of leaving
their Garden Home
safe
and
secure
while they travel in
their 2012 Triple
E Regency Van
around the country.
As they travel, the
Carter’s often stop to enjoy
the breathtaking sights that nature has to
offer and capture them to enjoy upon their
return home. Who knew those photographs
would be award winners? Guy and Connie
entered a photo contest sponsored by
Triple Recretional Vehicles/Leisure Travel
Vans. Out of the one hundred and thirty-
six photos entered and voted on, two of the
Carter’s scenic photos of travels in their
RV won the couple a new digital camera
and the two photos will be featured in the
manufacturer’s calendar!
STYLE
Winning
The photo taken at Bridal Veil
Falls, North Carolina in September 2012
received  the “silver” prize (second place).
The photo taken in June 2012 of theWindsor
Ruins near Port Gibson, Mississippi earned
a top spot among the thirteen photos chosen
for the calendar as well. Needless to say
Guy, Connie and even Bogie, their traveling
Bassett Hound, are pretty excited about
being featured.
Congratulations Guy and Connie!
Your friends at Kirby Pines are proud of our
two talented traveling residents!
by five minutes each
week.
By the end of the 6th
week, we were walking
30
or more minutes
with a good pace of 2 miles per hour
or better. Other benefits included
improved balance, weight loss, and
strengthening. Along with regular
exercise,
participants
learned
interesting
information
about
arthritis and helpful tips to ease the
pain and worries of arthritis. Some
participants in the class enjoyed
walking outside around the lake with
gentle hills and pleasant scenery,
while others preferred a more level
walking surface through the lovely
decorated hallways.
If you missed our first class
we will be offering Walk with Ease
again this spring, beginning March
4
th. You don’t have to have arthritis
to join the class, and only need to
walk for ten minutes. It’s a great class
for someone who hasn’t exercised in
a while but wants to get back in the
step of things. The class is limited to
15
participants. To cover the cost of
the workbook, there will be an $4.00
registration fee. Please register with
Mary in the Oasis by completing an
application and release form. Get in
step this Spring!
