The Sky’s the Limit!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Once
again we are reminded of the story of
pilgrims and Indians coming together
to share food and friendship. This
school book history lesson also teaches
children the importance of acceptance
and recognition of differences, customs
and just how important it is to form
friendships.
In October of 1862, our country was
in the midst of the Civil War, when
President Lincoln set by proclamation the
last Thursday of November as a day of
thanksgiving. Prior to this, thanksgiving
had been celebrated on different days
surrounding regional harvests. Lincoln
proclaimed – “I do, therefore, invite
my fellow citizens in every part of the
United States…to set apart and observe
the last Thursday of November as a day
of thanksgiving and prayer and praise
to our beneficent Father … command
to His tender care all those who have
become widows, orphans, mourners or
sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in
which we are unavoidably engaged, and
fervently implore the interposition of the
Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the
nations, and to restore it, as soon as may
be consistent with the divine purpose, to
Thanksgiving
a t K i r b y P i n e s
the full enjoyment of peace, harmony,
tranquility and union.” (For the first time
Thanksgiving was celebrated on the
same day by all states that belong to the
Union).
In many ways, we owe this national
holiday to President Lincoln, who
saw the need to bring all citizens
together as one nation. Were it not for
his proclamation, we might still be
celebrating Thanksgiving on different
days across the United States.
This Thanksgiving, make time to reflect
on thewonderful events that you and your
families have been blessed with over the
years. If you plan to get together here at
Kirby, please make your reservations, as
we usually have a large group of guests
in the dining room on Thanksgiving Day.
On Tuesday, October 23rd, Kirby
Pines reached new heights, offering free
Hot Air Balloon Rides to our residents.
Bluff City Balloons set up shop on
the grounds and gave everyone who
signed up the ride of their life.
As the crowd gathered in enthusiastic
anticipation, a local reporter
from ABC 24 News joined in
the excitement by interviewing
residents like Sally Watson,
pictured here.
As people rode up, up and
away in this beautiful balloon,
there were waves, smiles,
laughter and in one particular
instance, the singing of hymns.
Thank you, Elsie Huffard and
Joan Dodson, for the serenade, it was
truly uplifting!
Some folks decided to stand their
ground, however, like new residents
Don and Marilyn Duke, featured on our
cover. They opted for a ride a bit closer
to the ground, but didn’t want to miss
out on the fun!
