This year, February is the month
of love and new beginnings as both
Valentine’s Day and the Chinese New
Year fall in the same month.
February 19th, begins the year of the
Blue Sheep. Translations occasionally
render Sheep as Ram or Goat. The
New Year is one that takes off calmly,
assured of where it is headed. The Year
of the Blue Sheep is a time of good
fortune and abundance, and a time
when the arts will flourish and creativity
will flow. Ancient folklore tells us that
individuals born in the year of the Blue
Sheep (1956, 1897) are artistic, inspired,
empathic, and naturally creative. They
appreciate beauty in all forms and are
connoisseurs of the best that life has to
offer.
In China, eight is a number of good
fortune and Sheep is the eighth earthly
branch. The earthly symbol for the Blue
Sheep is wood. A strong and flexible
material that can provide structure, float
when over dams, and yet hold water
back from damaging life. This earthly
branch is stronger than it can appear. At
Love and New Beginnings

age twenty-eight the Chinese are said to
find their true calling in life and the best
part of a Sheep’s life is when they are
an elder. Other Sheep years are 1944,
1932, 1920 & 1908.
February 14th is, of course,
Valentine’s Day, a day set aside to
remember past and current loves. Do
you remember making and receiving
handmade Valentine’s Day cards,
or being able to go to the local Five
and Dime and buying a package of
Valentine’s Day cards for a quarter?
Today, I’m not sure you can even make
a handmade card for two bits. You
certainly can’t mail one for that amount.
Times have certainly changed, but
acknowledging the love and friendship
of those around you remains as easy as
simply saying Happy Valentine’s Day!

This month we decided to go with a
theme that is near and dear to everyone’s
heart - Love Songs. Everyone knows
one, everyone has a favorite, and most
everyone has a fond memory associated
with it.
Residents at Kirby Pines were asked
to share their favorites with us and
hopefully just thinking of their special
song, thoughts of a loved one, present
or past, brought smiles to their faces
and a warm feeling in their hearts.
