Kurt and June Lord came to Kirby
Pines from their previous residence in
Fairfield Glade, TN. Kurt was born in
Maine, the oldest of 3 boys. He attended
Bates College for his pre-medical
requirements, but prior to graduation,
he was drafted into the Navy during
WWII, serving as a pharmacist’s mate
third class, and also as a translator for
German officer prisoners of war. Upon
discharge, he entered Boston University
Medical School, graduating with his
medical degree. During the KoreanWar,
he enlisted in the Army as a Captain
and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne
as a regimental surgeon. During this
time, Kurt made 12 jumps, and his
regiment participated in 2 atomic bomb
detonations at Frenchman’s Flat in
Nevada.
June was born on a farm in Missouri.
She was employed by the Missouri
Department of Health and Welfare and
was a paralegal for a U.S. Senator.When
Kurt and June lived in Florida, June was
involved with two commercial banks
and was instrumental in formation of
the Key Bank of Tampa, where she
was Executive Vice-President and
CEO. After retiring in 1990, June
became interested in genealogy where
she discovered that her ancestors were
pioneers who lived in Tennessee in the
early 1830s and forged on to Missouri
in the 1850s. She refers to moving to
Tennessee as “coming home”.

Billie Arnold
Billie Arnold joins us from her previous
residence in Olive Brach, MS. She was
born in Friendship, TN; her husband,
Harold Arnold was born in Madison
County,TN.Haroldpassedawayin2011.
The Arnolds were married 61 years;
and they have 2 sons, 3 grandchildren,
and 2 great grandchildren. Harold’s 40-
year career was Owner and Manager
of Star Electronics. Billie was a hair
stylist, she took cosmetology at Humes
High School and passed the State Board
shortly thereafter. She had her license at
age 16. She also worked for AT&T, and
as Secretary at Star Electronics.
Billie’s parents taught her to help others
who had less than she did. About 1970,
Billie told her husband that she had
made a New Year’s resolution to start
going to church. Arnold said he would
go with her; and they never missed a
Sunday. Special possessions include
her Mother’s Bible, and a picture of
Asa Hardison, her great grandfather. He
came by covered wagon with his wife
and 12 children from North Carolina to
Dyer County, TN.
Often, being a newcomer to a retirement
community is daunting; but two of
Billie’s best friends are here. She met
Jane Tomlinson in 1941 at Humes High
School; and met Fran Dyer at church in
2000.
We welcome this cheerful new
comer to the Kirby Pines Retirement
Community, and wish her well.
Katherine Atkins
Katherine (Kathy) Atkins moved to
Kirby Pines in May 2014 from her
previous residence in Collierville.
Kathy was born in Pinola, MS and
was married 59 1/2 years to Travis
Mallory Atkins who passed away in
2013.
Two children, two grandchildren,
and one great grandchild bring much
pleasure to her life. Kathy says that her
profession was mostly being a good
mom and house wife, although she also
worked for approximately 10 years as
a Purchasing Assistant at United Inns,
a franchise of Holiday Inns. Hobbies
and interests include trout fishing,
gardening, cards such as Phase 10,
Skipbo, Poker; all forms of dancing and
singing, and church. She loves music,
especially old hymns and 1940’s tunes.
In her own words, Kathy shares with us
the funniest thing she has experienced:
namely, on her wedding night as she
was preparing to beautify herself, she
dropped the tail of her beautiful white
negligee in the toilet. She was mortified!
Kathy asked that the following comment
be included in her “New Resident”
piece: “You will see that I have no
oddities, so all I can say is that the Lord
made me whole and beautiful”. With
her ability to laugh at herself and the
positive mindset that she displays, we
are sure that Kathy will easily assimilate
into our community. Welcome, Kathy!
