James and Nadine join us from their
previous home in Memphis. Married
61 years, they have 4 children, 4
grandchildren, and 3 great grands.
James is a 1955 graduate of Keegan’s
Radio, TV, and Electronics Institute;
attended Memphis Vocational Technical
School in 1971 and, in 1980, graduated
from State Tech and Memphis State U.
Continuing Education Program, studying
heat pumps and business administration.
He received Certificates from each of
the above institutions. He worked for 47
years as a refrigeration technician, and as
a sales and service representative at Sid
Harvey’s Central Supply. James also was
a Sergeant in the U.S. Army with a 2-year
stint in the Korean War and, Stateside,
in a medical unit. For 56 years, Nadine
was employed as a licensed insurance
agent at E.H. Crump and, afterwards,
with First Tennessee Bank as an account
representative.
James enjoys carpentry, handy-man repair
projects, jigsaw puzzles, and feeding
birds and squirrels. Nadine shares most of
James’ interests and also enjoys reading
and walking. Travel within the U.S. was
enjoyed by both of them.
Nadine says that the Kirby Pines
Retirement Community is where they are
supposed to be at this time in their lives
and, she adds, they both love this place
and the people. Get to know James and
Nadine West. We are fortunate to have
these two in our midst.

Larry McKenzie
New resident, Larry McKenzie, was
born in Van, Texas. He married Nelda
Joe King (Joe) in 1956, recalling his
instant attraction to her because she was
pretty and “full of life”. He and Joe had 2
daughters, 2 grandchildren; and one great
granddaughter. Joe passed away in 2010.
Asked about the most valuable lessons
from his parents, Larry cites respect for
God’s Word and its application to life
situations.
Since 1956, Larry has been a full-time
Minister for the Church of Christ; and has
served asMinister of theHighlandChurch
of Christ for 46 years. He was awarded
a BA Degree from Abilene Christian
U. with a major in Bible and minor in
History; and furthered his education with
graduate studies in religion. Larry began
his full-timeministry inWashington State.
Labor-intensive work opportunities in his
educational path included delivery of ice
to homes during the afternoon “hot shot”
shift, and working in an apple orchard.
His travels include, England, Germany,
Austria, Ukraine, SouthAfrica,Argentina,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Papua
New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia,
Thailand, Philippines, and Vanuatu.
Upon reflection, Larry McKenzie may
seem to be a paradox. He’s laconic
in speech but outgoing to friends and
strangers alike. Larry will be a go-to
source to fulfill volunteer opportunities
that require a good listener, appropriate
words of wisdom, and/or a helpful hand.
Jim & Gladys Smith
Jim and Gladys Ann (G.A.) Smith join
us from their previous residence in
Collierville, TN. Prior to retirement,
G.A. was Art Director in the Graphic
Design world. Jim was a transportation
analyst. Married for 34 years, they
have a daughter and 2 grandsons. Jim
says that being granddaddy to these
boys makes him feel young and happy.
Valuable lessons learned from their
parents include, for G.A., generosity
and kindness to others. For Jim, the
lessons included, not saying anything
behind a person’s back that you’re not
willing to say to their face; and, be
honest even if it hurts.
Their interests include reading, art, and
musicals, for G.A. For Jim, snow skiing,
water skiing, hiking, swimming, long
walks, and playing with the grandkids.
He cherishes the freedom felt when
skiing down a mountain. Jim’s favorite
music includes Blues, Bob Dylan, and
new or innovative sounds. G.A. prefers
symphonic and rock and roll music.
Their love of travel has taken them
on a European tour of 10 countries,
and Hawaii. Greece is one place Jim
would like to see, having a life-long
fascination with the Mediterranean, and
reading much Greek mythology. G.A.
would like to revisit Italy.
We are most pleased that Jim and G.A.
have joined us. Jim has already become
one of the Hobby Shop habitués who
are glad to have his skills. Jim and G.A.,
you’ve made the right move. Welcome.
