It was one hundred years ago that
Congress passed legislation designating
the second Sunday in May as Mother’s
Day. As with many such actions passed
by Congress, there were several years
of planning that preceded their 1914
legislation. The idea to create a national
Mother’sDayobservance began in1907,
when Anna Jarvis asked her church to
hold a service in memory of her mother.
Truly Anna Jarvis’ mother must have
had a significant role in her life for
Anna to begin a letter-writing campaign
that would eventually establish what we
know today as Mother’s Day.
In keeping with Anna’s desire
to spend a day in observance of our
mothers, Kirby Pines will host a huge
Mother’s Day cookout on Saturday,
May 10th. Held under the towering
trees surrounding our gazebo, this
cookout has become a tradition at
Kirby Pines that residents and families
look forward to each year. This cookout
is like no other in the Memphis area!
Foods include barbecue chicken,
hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad,
baked beans, watermelon, ice cream,
and several other mouth-watering
items. In addition to a petting zoo, sack
races and a balloon house, children will
be able to enter a “fishing rodeo”, try

their skills on a Robo surf ride, and
meet “Jabberblabber”. We encourage
you to invite as many family members
and friends as you would like to this
fun-filled afternoon on Kirby’s park-
like grounds.
Of course, we also want everyone
to spend time remembering his or her
mother. Perhaps these quotes might
remind you of your mom:
To give without any reward, or any
notice, has a special quality of its own.”

American pilot and writer
Those who bring sunshine to the
lives of others cannot keep it from
themselves.”

British writer
I think we are here for each other.”

Taking it Downtown
This month we headed downtown to
enjoy the spring weather and see the
changes full bloom in Memphis.
We hopped on a Trolley outside the
Orpheum Theater and cruised Main St.,
the Pinch District; we saw the Pyramid
(
under construction to house Bass Pro
Shop), Mud Island, Beale Street Landing,
and the South Main Historic District.
Residents Morgan Fowler, Virginia
Herrin and Jean Mauney, along with our
own Michael Escamilla then enjoyed
lunch at The Majestic Grille to complete
our tour.
A big Thank You goes out to all of them
for being great sports and wonderful
company!
