October 2015
ON THE PINECONE COVER
So many residents and guests were
present in September as we celebrated
Kirby Pines’ thirty-second anniversary
that it seems fitting to reflect back on
the celebration and the commitment
selected for this year – Kindness.
Beginning with Thursday evening’s
blessing of the flag, the community was
filled with excitement and pride. The
actual flag raising ceremony on Friday
had a large number of attendees and
this event demonstrated our “kindness”
as we reflected on the 14th anniversary
of what has become known simply as
9/11.
The following day maintenance and
ground employees busily prepared for
the Lighting of the Lake ceremony,
while still other employees began
preparing a multitude of delicious foods
for a reception later that night.
As dusk came closer, residents, guests
and staff began gathering at the lake for
what was to become another beautiful
ceremony of lighting an individual
candle in honor of each anniversary
year for Kirby Pines. While we were

very lucky and honored to have a
resident representative for many of the
thirty-two years available to physically
light an anniversary candle; the years
without a resident representative were
ceremonialy recognized by releasing
white doves.
This annual event – The Lighting of the
Lake – was yet another example of why
Kirby Pines continues to be the only
retirement community to have ever
been voted and selected as the “best”
retirement community in the southeast
by readers of The Commercial Appeal.
Until next year, happy thirty-second
anniversary.

With the beautiful weather still present
and fall closing in, we decided to take a
trip to Dixon Gallery and Gardens. The
museum is currently being renovated,
but the gardens set the canvas for the
ambitious work of sculptor, Jun Kaneko.
Twenty-four of Kaneko’s large-scale
ceramic and bronze sculptures have
been placed throughout the Dixon
gardens, the most ambitious outdoor
sculpture installation in Dixon history.
Ann Smith stands near the garden
entrance which features one of Kaneko’s
more colorful ceramics on our front
cover. The back shows one of his “large
head” sculptures, surrounded by Jackie
Gunther, Ann Smith, Helen Schrodt and
Joycie Holbrook
