The Pinecone

July 2016
ON THE PINECONE COVER
July is traditionally the month that
we begin to think about summer and
celebrating America’s national holiday,
Independence Day. It also signals the
official start of summer when Memphis
experiences longer, humid, hotter days.
Luckily for us all, our large park-like
acreage provides us with plenty of areas
where we can step outside to stroll under
the shade of numerous tall trees, or enjoy
a day of fishing with friends and family
along the banks of our own lake.
After your stroll, you may want to come
inside and enjoy the featured hot dog of the
week in the Bistro. For several years now,
Kirby Pines has participated in National
Hot Dog Month, by preparing a different
kind of hot dog each week. Although
this was originally due to the increased
number of visiting grandchildren, our own
residents look forward to the variety of
hot dogs served. After all, a good hot dog
is a perfect way to celebrate the start of
summer and Independence Day.
This July, when we gather to celebrate the
birth of our nation, let us remember what
the Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes,
said in 1941:
Celebrating Independence
a t K i r b y P i n e s
What Constitutes an American?
“Not color nor race nor religion. Not
the pedigree of his family nor the place
of his birth. Not the coincidence of his
citizenship. Not his social status nor
his bank account. Not his trade nor his
profession. An American is one who
loves justice and believes in the dignity of
man. An American is one who will fight
for his freedom and that of his neighbor.
An American is one who will sacrifice
property, ease and security in order that
he and his children may retain the right of
freedom.”
This July 4th, join with me in saluting all
past, current and future Americans as we
bask in the warmth of their actions and the
season. Happy 4th of July!

Thismonthwe decided to embrace thewarm temperatures and pay homage to summertime.
As a kid, it was always the greatest time of year; no school, long days and sunshine.
As retired residents of Kirby Pines,
the same holds true for us, so we
wanted to just go out and play.
Our front and back cover features
Glenn and Janice Wall at Shelby
Farms Park, which lies in the heart
of Memphis, on 4,500 acres of
green space and 6.5 miles of urban
trail. It’s a beautiful place with so
much to offer, including paddle
boat rentals, gratiously supplied by
our new friend, Mike Turner, from
the Boathouse at Pine Lake.
To the left are residents Dan and
Carol Yount, who, with the Walls,
braved the heat (and the water) to
make July’s Pinecone so much fun.
We thank all of you so much for
being great sports. We had a blast!
