While William (Bill) and
Carol Odom come to Kirby
Pines from their previous
home in Memphis, prior resi-
dences include Richmond, VA,
Hampden-Sydney, VA, Keuka
Park, N.Y. and McKenzie, TN.
Married for 59 years, their
family includes 2 children, and
4 grandchildren.
Bill received his B.A., M.A.,
and PhD degrees from the Uni-
versity of Virginia. His prima-
ry career track was teaching,
as Professor of Greek at Ran-
dolph-Macon and Hampden-
Sydney Colleges. He also was
President of Bethel College,
and was Director of Fundrais-
ing for the Salvation Army and
Habitat for Humanity Interna-
tional. Carol received a B.A.
Degree from Keuka College
in N.Y. and an M.S. Degree
from UT Martin in Elemen-
tary Education. From 1976 to
1991, she taught at McKenzie
Elementary School, as a Title
One Teacher. She also was the
Administrative Assistant to the
Director of Education and Cul-
tural Programs at the Smithso-
nian Museum.
Get to know these new resi-
dents. Busy life style – com-
mitted volunteers to help oth-
ers – not ready for the rocking
chair. Perfect. We are pleased
that they chose Kirby Pines as
their new home.
Bill & Carol
Odom
A native Memphian, Dr. Jo-
seph Prescott (Joe) comes to
Kirby Pines from his previ-
ous residence in Oakland, TN.
He and his wife, Mary Grace,
were married for 66 years.
Their family consists of 2 chil-
dren, 6 grandchildren, and 12
great grands.
Joe has enjoyed two diverse ca-
reers. In 1953, he was awarded
a Doctor of Hypnology from
the now-closed College of Ap-
plied Psychology. For 42 ensu-
ing years, he was employed as
a Hypnosis Consultant by the
Memphis Counseling Center.
In 1968, the American College
of Life Underwriters awarded
Joe a degree in Chartered Life
Underwriting. The Penn Mutu-
al hired Joe as an Underwriter
and he was on the staff from
1953 to 1972.
Joe also was in the U.S. mili-
tary during WWII and piloted
the B-29 on the final bombing
mission of that war. Joe has
held hypnosis demonstrations,
holds 3 patents and numerous
copyrights on several books,
and is a prolific writer.
This new resident has no inten-
tion of slowing down – quick
of mind, pursues information
on issues that grab his atten-
tion, eager to contribute to en-
hancement of his new home.
Let’s give Joe a warm wel-
come. He has much to offer.
Joe
Prescott
Gene and Gail Waldrop come
to Kirby Pines from their
home in Collierville, TN. Mar-
ried for 56 years, their family
consists of 2 daughters and 4
grandchildren.
In 1959, Mississippi State U.
awarded Gene a BS Degree in
Civil Engineering. He spent
37 years as Senior Design
Engineer with the Chicago
Bridge & Iron, and 7 years
as Engineer Supervisor with
American Tank & Vessel. Gail
was awarded a BA Degree in
English from David Lipscomb
College in 1958; a ASN De-
gree in 1980 from Memphis
State U.; and a BSN degree
from U. of Alabama. She
taught high school for 3 years;
spent 15 years as a homemaker
and, then, 23 years as a Regis-
tered Nurse.
Interests include reading his-
tory, genealogy research,
watching European soccer on
TV, classical music, and the-
ater. Gene has been involved
with the Collierville Literacy
Council and Gail was a Master
Gardener in Alabama; Docent
at Birmingham Botanical Gar-
dens; Birmingham Museum of
Art; Brooks Museum of Art;
and the Literacy Councils in
Birmingham and Collierville.

Gene & Gail
Waldrop
Born in Memphis, Ted comes
to Kirby Pines from his later
home in Seal Beach, Cali-
fornia. His career was Court
Reporter, having attended
Memphis State, U. of Tennes-
see, Vanderbilt, and the Chi-
cago College of Commerce.
In Chicago, he was the Court
Reporter for the U.S. District
Court of Chicago, working for
Judge Julius Hoffman during
the infamous “Chicago 7” tri-
al. Subsequent to his Chicago
stint, Ted returned to Memphis
and spent 35 years with the
firm Short-Doudson-Williams.
His last position, prior to re-
tirement, was with Federal Ex-
press.
When he was 15 years old,
Ted decided to go to New York
City, where he saw his first
production of the Royal Bal-
let “Swan Lake” and had the
added pleasure of snagging a
seat next to Lauren Bacall and
Humphrey Bogart. His hob-
bies and interests include rac-
ing sail boats, bridge, reading
biographies, classical music,
opera, ballroom dancing, and
line dancing.
Get to know this somewhat
shy guy. He’s eager to settle
into our residential community
and make new friends. Given
his plethora of talents and ex-
perience, Ted is a welcome ad-
dition to our ranks and we’re
happy to have him with us!
